What To Consider When Designing Your Netball Dress?

When designing a netball dress, you will encounter several options.

These choices will help shape your netball dress and bring your team’s identity to life.

Bespoke kits are gaining popularity in the netball world, with many teams recognising the value of designing their own kit to better represent their team’s brand.

In this blog, we hope to explain the difference between the options and the benefits. There are no right or wrong options, but we aim to help you find the best option to suit your team.

Racerback vs Standard Back

Your first choice is between racerback or standard back.

In netball, the terms "racerback" and "standard back" are used to describe the design of the back of a netball dress.

A standard back netball dress is designed with two shoulder straps that run parallel to each other and connect at the top of the back. The back of the dress is generally cut straight across the middle of the back.

A racerback netball dress, on the other hand, is designed with two shoulder straps that join together at the back in a V-shape, exposing more of the shoulder blades and upper back. The straps are set wider apart and usually meet at a point between the shoulder blades.

The key difference between these two designs is the amount of freedom and mobility they provide to the arms and shoulders.

The racerback design allows for a greater range of motion in the shoulders, which can be beneficial for players who require a lot of upper body movement and flexibility.

The standard back design, while less mobile, offers more support and coverage for the back and shoulders.

Overall, the choice between a racerback and standard back netball dress is a matter of personal preference and may depend on the specific needs and playing style of the individual player or team.

Colour & Design

Once you have made the racerback vs standard back decision, you will be presented with loads of design options.

To make life easier for you, there will often be templates of patterns and styles for inspiration as you put together your netball dress.

The Serious Sport 3D Kit Designer

With the Serious Sport 3D kit designer, there are 25 design template choices for netball dresses but if there is not one that you feel properly represents your team then our in-house design team will be on hand to support this process.

Serious can also replicate a design that you previously had, but it is important to note that there might be a slight difference. For the closest match, send us an item of your previous kit for reference and we can match it.

Just as important as the design, the choice of colours will come later in the process, and you can incorporate your club colours into your design to make your design personal to your team.

Depending on what design you have chosen, you can include multiple colours on your netball dress.

Fabric Choice

Fabric choice can be the next dilemma in designing a netball dress and the right choice will be based on your team’s preference.

Traditionally, there are two netball dress fabrics to choose from which differ in fit and strength.

At Serious, there are two fabrics to choose from, the Club 180 and the Pro 230.

Club 180 is a midweight fabric tailored for various sports and training garments, including polos and netball dresses.

It features a slightly open weave to promote better breathability, ensuring you stay cool even during intense physical activities.

The Pro 230 is a high-stretch and high-density knit fabric, consistent with dresses you will see in the Netball Superleague.

Its exceptional stretchability and density provide a snug and supportive fit, making it a top choice for those seeking athletic wear that offers flexibility and durability.

Length of Dress

The length of your netball dress is another size choice you get and they come in three options – short, regular, and long.

Short is two inches off the regular length and long is two inches added to the regular length.
